Becoming {more} of a morning person...

A while back when shared 7 Facts About Myself, I confessed that I am a complete morning person (think like 3-4 in the morning person).  Carolina from Mama Insticts suggested that I share some of my tips for becoming a morning person.  Now, since I am already a morning person I am not quite sure this is fair to tell you how to become a morning person.  What I can tell you is what I think makes me a successful morning-person (at least most of the time:)).
All that being said…

8 tips for becoming a morning person...

one

{start in The Word}

I can't stress this enough.  The days that I get up and don't spend my first bit of time reading my Bible, devotional, praying and journalling, I just end up feeling frazzled- no matter how early or late I get up.

two

{don't hit snooze}

Seriously, it is like a chain reaction, once you do it once you will do it more.  And this causes more interrupted sleep.  Get your sleep in one good solid chunk!

three

{get some coffee}

My morning cup is a wonderful blessing each day:).

four

{realize what a productive time it is}

This is the only time of day where I don't have a million other things begging for my attention.  I also think when you start with an early morning you start your day more proactively (what do you want or really need to get done) rather than reactively (responding to what the day throws at you).

five

{make a to do list}

Okay, this one may not be for everyone, but I thrive under a good through to do list.  I put things on there that will be easy to accomplish to get myself rolling each morning.  I even prioritize mine (weird right).  But even a simple to do list can give you the motivation to get up in the morning- I want/need to get ______ done.

six

{make more time during the day}

When I get stuff done in the morning, I have more time to spend with my husband and our daughter later in the day.  I think about how much I value and don't want to sacrifice that time and that motivates me to get out of bed!

seven

{early to bed, early to rise}

I am not recommending you sleep less… though I do struggle with getting enough sleep (I think that is a common problem for most moms).  If you want to get up earlier, you are going to have to go to bed a little earlier.  I suggest getting off the social media or turning off the TV- those can be time suckers late at night that keep you up later.

eight

{just do it}

Just commit… set the alarm… and don't let yourself hit snooze.  I think after a week or so of getting up a little earlier you won't regret it!

Are you are morning person?  What do you do/have to do to make sure you get yourself up in the morning?

  2. I'm so glad I saw your post on Make a Difference Monday! I am NOT a morning person but love to get up before my kids when I can muster up the energy to force myself. :) I need to be consistent with going to bed early to be sure I get enough rest to get up early. Great suggestions that I will be putting into practice (with baby steps!)

  3. I wake up at 3/4 also! So happy to see that other mamas see it as a productive time, also. Once I started waking up WAY earlier than my kids, getting in my bible time, workout, and housework BEFORE they needed my attention, my whole attitude changed :) I encourage all of the moms in my homeschool group to do the same. Totally guarantee that once you are used to it and not fighting the sleepiness, you will have way less "stress" days.

  5. This is great, Stasia! I need to revamp my schedule and this will really help. I think I need to go ahead and set the timer on my coffee maker- that will help me avoid the snooze button! Life has been too busy with the four littles so I need to make sure I'm being as productive as possible! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Life get so busy and it just gives us moms a little time to get stuff done to ourselves!
      And btw I think one day I want to invest in a coffee maker with a timer… it would save me even more time in the morning to be productive ;)

  7. I am definitely a morning person and love the hour or two I manage to carve out of my day to write. It's taken time, though, to cultivate a habit of waking at 4am each weekday and I always start with coffee :) (still need that jolt, even though I love mornings!) Unless my kids are up super-early with me, it's a lovely time of day when the house is still quiet.

  8. I love this! I am totally a morning person and I absolutely love my quiet and prayerful time alone in the morning. Plus I can usually get a few chores done, have my coffee, and get my homeschooling materials organized for the day.

    Thanks for sharing (and for linking up to the #SHINEbloghop).

    Wishing you a lovely weekend.

    1. To be honest… me too. I get in the middle of something or worse sucked into a time waster. I have to remind myself that sleep is important to my health!

  10. What a great post! I've found that making a to-do list right before I go to bed (early) helps me begin my day with purpose. I also know that if I keep hitting snooze, I'll miss the only time of day that is quiet enough for me to read my Bible. This sets the tone for my whole day. So even if it's not what I want to do, I know I'd better do it. I'm always happy I do :)

  12. Stasia, these are such good tips and many that I've implemented since becoming a mom (and also a blogger). I've never really been a morning person, but that was when I was working for someone else. When I wanted to attend a training or while I was pursuing formal education, I could easily be a bit of a morning person because it was something I wanted to do.

    All of this easily translated to being a mother. I need some time where things are quiet and I can do (or not) anything I so choose. I am often much more focused and therefore also productive.

    It's about time to alter my schedule just a bit and become an even earlier riser (closer to your rise time), so that's a work in progress, but I'm certainly in need of it! :)

  13. I once read to put your alarm clock (which has been replaced with a phone) in a place where you'd actually have to get out of bed. Great tips. Your neighbor over at Messy Marriage.

  15. I would love to be a morning person! When we were on vacation at the beginning of the summer, I was up before 6 a.m. every morning to go fishing. I loved how quiet the morning was, and how much of the day I was utilizing!

    I never thought about your insight which said, "with an early morning you start your day more proactively (what do you want or really need to get done) rather than reactively (responding to what the day throws at you)". Wow! That is so very true!

    My issue is getting to bed earlier. I liked your gentle nudge to "just do it". ;-)

    Thank you!
